FAQ
WHAT ARE YOUR OFFICE HOURS?
Administrative office hours are Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm and Friday, 10am-4pm. If you reach out via phone or email, a member of our team will typically respond within 1-2 business days, within the stated office hours.
As a reminder, Patch Counseling is unable to provide 24-hour crisis service. In the event that you or a loved one are feeling unsafe, require immediate medical or psychiatric assistance, please go to the nearest emergency room, call 911, or call the Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240.
WHAT IS A MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST (MFT)?
You may be wondering, “Marriage Therapist,” do you only work with married people or couples? Well, to simply put it, no. Being a Marriage and Family Therapist means that the majority of training provided focuses on the relationships we have with others (family, friends, partners, colleagues, teachers, employers and community) and the relationship with have with ourselves. Basically, MFT’s are relational therapists and assist in helping people have better relationships, starting with gaining insight about themselves, their values and goals.
WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?
We provide therapy for teens and individuals that want to go therapy and are motivated to make change. For teens, their parents are required to have periodic family coaching sessions either with or without their teen, depending on what is appropriate. Please visit our teen specialty page to learn more or visit our individual specialty page to learn more about how we work with adults.
HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?
Typically, sessions are 50-minutes for individual clients and 60-minutes for family sessions when the client is present. In some situations, 90-minute sessions are appropriate and will be decided on a case by case basis. All session types will be discussed prior making the appointment and are outlined in Patch Counseling practice policies.
HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE?
It varies, but rates of improvement are much higher when people are motivated and are practicing skills outside of sessions. In that case, they will experience some relief after ~4 sessions. However, completion of therapy is usually based on the issue/goals that are collaborated on. There are some issues that are appropriate for short-term, solution-focused care (10-12 sessions) and that require you to be actively using skills outside of session. Other people will decide to have ongoing supportive therapy once the relationship is developed. Your progress is up to you and treatment will be collaborated on with the therapist.
DO YOU DO BI-WEEKLY SESSIONS OR PROVIDE THERAPY ONCE A MONTH?
We work rather intensely with clients, which means that it is expected for clients to make a commitment of weekly sessions in the beginning stage of therapy in order to develop a therapeutic relationship. In some cases, a person can work up to bi-weekly sessions when an understanding of skills have been established and they need more time outside of therapy to practice. However, when too much time has lapsed between sessions, the majority of the session gets spent on “catch-up” rather than getting into the deep work of therapy.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?
Patch Counseling does not take insurance and is not in network with any insurance companies. The client is responsible for the full session rate at the time of service. If the client has a PPO plan with out of network coverage, we can provide a super bill for potential reimbursement. It is recommended that all individuals interested in using their insurance for possible reimbursement should contact their insurance provider prior to initiating services in order to gain understanding of your out of network benefits.
*HSA/FSA account cards can also be used as a form of payment and/or super bill can be submitted for reimbursement.
*Reminder, the use of insurance requires that you meet medical necessity for treatment, which means that the client will have to have a mental health diagnosis.
DO YOU PROVIDE SLIDING SCALE SERVICES?
Patch counseling does not have any sliding scale services available at this time. If you are in need of sliding fee counseling due to be uninsured or under-insured, Open Path Collective might be a good place to start. Visit their website: https://openpathcollective.org
DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?
At Patch Counseling we require that you provide at least 48- hours notice when rescheduling or canceling your therapy appointment. This is necessary because the time slot that you commit to for therapy is only for you. This also gives us enough time to fill the spot with someone else who needs it. There will be no penalty for cancellations made prior to the 48 hours.
No shows and cancellations made less than 48-hours will result in an automatic charge to the credit card on file in the amount of the full session fee. You will forfeit your online counseling session after 15 minutes.
Emergency issues such as illness and/or injury will always be considered. If you are feeling sick expect to cancel 48 hours in advance and/or move your in-person session to online.
GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE
As of January 1, 2022, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
